The Girl’s Rating: ★★★★★
A review of Witch & Wizard by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet by The Girl (age 11)
This is the astonishing testimonial of Wisty and Whit Allgood, a sister and brother who were torn from their family in the middle of the night, slammed into prison, and accused of being a witch and wizard.
They are not alone in their terrifying predicament. Thousands of young people have been kidnapped. Some have been accused; many others remain missing. Their fate is unknown, and the worst is feared — for the ruling regime will stop at nothing to suppress life and liberty, music and books, art and magic…and the pursuit of being a normal teenager.
Most copies of this story have already been seized, shredded, or burned. Read this rare, surviving edition and pass it along with care — before it’s too late. (publisher’s summary)
I liked the story line of this book; it drew me in right away. The idea of it made me want to read it immediately. I liked how the authors switched off between Whit and Wisty’s point of view. You really get to know the characters as if they were your friends.
The New Order really reminded me of the Nazis.
Witch & Wizard kept me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t wait to start the second book, The Gift, but that one has a different co-author, and I’m not liking the writing. I don’t know if I’ll continue the series.

I wonder if the co-author for the third book will go back to the first writer. I hope she continues the series if she enjoys it.

I think the third book has a different co-author, and at this point, The Girl is so frustrated that I doubt she’ll get that far in the series. In fact, she’s long abandoned book 2. Ah well.

I read this a while back and wasn’t crazy about it. I’m glad The Girl found it more appealing since she’s the target audience. I find it out that they switched co-authors like that.

Patterson has done that with the Women’s Murder Club series, but I think I’m done reading that. It says a lot when you invest so much of your time in 9 books, then have no desire to read the 10th or 11th, etc.

I couldn’t wait to read The Girl’s review because I have heard James Patterson does good MG books, but you know I’m sort of prejudiced against The Empire That Is James Patterson. But if The Girl likes it, well, that changes it….

I’m not much of a fan of Patterson myself. I’ve read several of his books, but when he started cranking out 80 bazillion a year, they really weren’t that good. Whether that has to do with the co-authors who do most of the writing or just that they’re being released so fast, I have no idea. If I remember correctly, this is the first Patterson book The Girl has read, and she’s already abandoned Book 2, so that says a lot.

The premise sounds pretty good. A real page turner for sure. So glad the girl enjoyed it.

She was really excited about this book and couldn’t stop talking about it. Too bad the second book fell so flat for her.

I think it’s been out for a few years, but I don’t really follow Patterson. The Girl wanted to read it because so many of her classmates love the series.
