Welcome to Mailbox Monday, the weekly meme created by Marcia, formerly from The Printed Page, where book lovers share the titles they received for review, purchased, or otherwise obtained over the past week. Mailbox Monday currently is on tour, and this month’s host is Burton Book Review.
Here’s what I received:
Across the Mekong River by Elaine Russell, from Julia Drake PR for review
In a California courtroom, seventeen-year-old Nou Lee’s mind reels with what she is about to do. What she must do to survive. She reflects on the splintered path that led to this moment, beginning twelve years ago in 1978, when her Hmong family escaped from Laos after the Communist takeover. The story follows the Lees from a squalid refugee camp in Thailand to a new life in Minnesota and eventually California. Family members struggle to survive in a strange foreign land, haunted by the scars of war and loss of family. Across the Mekong River paints a vivid picture of the Hmong immigrant experience exploring family love, sacrifice, and the resiliency of the human spirit to overcome tragic circumstances. Silent Kills by C.E. Lawrence, a contest win from Savvy Verse & Wit (Thanks, Serena!), which I will be passing on to my mother (Amazon/IndieBound)
EVERYONE HAS WHAT HE WANTS
The killer picks her up in a Manhattan night club. Another trendy victim of the latest downtown scene. Young. Fresh. Healthy. Perfect. The police find her body in a Bronx park. Pale as a ghost. Peaceful in death. Her life has been drained away. Slowly. Methodically. Brilliantly…
NO ONE SURVIVES WHAT HE TAKES
NYPD profiler Lee Campbell has seen the gruesome handiwork of the most deranged criminal minds. But this is something new. Something unbelievably twisted. A blood-obsessed lunatic who chooses his victims with deadly, loving care — and forces Campbell to confront the demons in his own life. No matter who wins this game, there will be blood… (publisher’s summary)
The Cooking of Germany (Foods of the World) by Nika Standen and Time-Life Books (Amazon)
A friend surprised me with this book over the weekend. I’d been coveting the one she snagged at a recent library sale, and her mother happened to have another copy. It was fun looking through it and remembering the meals of my childhood. Now let’s see if I can recreate them!
What books did you add to your shelves recently?

Across the Mekong River really captured my interest. I live in an area settled by large numbers of refugees from Laos (mostly in the 1980s-90s), and their traumas showed up regularly in my work. Thanks for sharing…I’ll be watching for the review.

Across the Mekong River sounds like a book for me! I was born and raised in the 70’s. Fron 1978-81, when I was in high school, I was a volunteer ESL tutor for kids from Cambodia and Vietnam. I remember some of the stories they told me. They went through that hell only to come to Minnesota and get hell from the other kids in high school. It was so sad, and I was picked on for helping them. I hope you enjoy your books!

I haven’t heard of those books but they look fun, especially the German cooking one. I’ve only ever had one meal that was authentically German. (At a German restaurant in Las Vegas when I was a teenager – I had some sort of rice stuffed cabbage roll. I was a vegetarian at the time and it was the only veggie option they had. I remember it being quite good.)
