Welcome to Mailbox Monday, the weekly meme created by Marcia from A girl and her books (formerly The Printed Page) where book lovers share the titles they received for review, purchased, or otherwise obtained over the past week. Mailbox Monday currently is on tour, and I am thrilled to be your host for March! Don’t forget to leave the link to your Mailbox Monday post in the Linky below.
Here’s what I received:
The Widow’s Daughter by Nicholas Edlin, from Penguin via Shelf Awareness (Amazon/IndieBound)
Peter Sokol, an artist living in San Diego, is haunted by his past. In 1943, Captain Sokol is a surgeon in the U.S. Marines stationed in Auckland, New Zealand, where he and his longtime nemesis have fallen in love with the same beautiful and enigmatic woman, Emily Walters. Dismissive of Emily’s suspiciously British mother and violent brother, the two vie for her hand. When Emily’s brother is discovered murdered, Sokol is the prime suspect. As he fights to prove his innocence, he finds that the woman he loves is not who she seems and the blood of another might be on his hands. (publisher’s summary)
The Song Remains the Same by Allison Winn Scotch, from Putnam via LibraryThing (Amazon/IndieBound)
One of only two survivors of a plane crash, Nell Slattery wakes in the hospital with no memory of it, or who she is, or was. Now she must piece together both body and mind with the help of family and friends who have their own agendas. She filters through photos, art, music, and stories, hoping that something will jog her memory, and soon, in tiny bits and pieces, Nell starts remembering…
It isn’t long before she learns to question the stories presented by her mother, her sister and business partner, and her husband. In the end she will learn that forgiving betrayals small and large is the only true path to healing herself — and to finding happiness. (publisher’s summary)
Baker Towers by Jennifer Haigh, a contest win from Unabridged Chick (Thanks, Audra!) (Amazon/IndieBound)
Bakerton is a community of company houses and church festivals, of union squabbles and firemen’s parades. Its neighborhoods include Little Italy, Swedetown, and Polish Hill. For its tight-knit citizens — and the five children of the Novak family — the 1940s will be a decade of excitement, tragedy, and stunning change. Baker Towers is a family saga and a love story, a hymn to a time and place long gone, to America’s industrial past, and to the men and women we now call the Greatest Generation. It is a feat of imagination from an extraordinary voice in American fiction, a writer of enormous power and skill. (publisher’s summary)
Here Be Dragons by Sharon Kay Penman, given to me by a co-worker (Amazon/IndieBound)
Thirteenth-century Wales is a divided country, ever at the mercy of England’s ruthless, power-hungry King John. Llewelyn, Price of North Wales, secures an uneasy truce by marrying the English king’s beloved illegitimate daughter, Joanna, who slowly grows to love her charismatic and courageous husband. But as John’s attentions turn again and again to subduing Wales — and Llewelyn — Joanna must decide where her love and loyalties truly lie.
The turbulent clashes of two disparate worlds and the destinies of the individuals caught between them spring to life in this magnificent novel of power and passion, loyalty and lies. (publisher’s summary)

Has anyone made a list of books titled “The ________’s Daughter”? They should! There are so many and there seems to be a new one every day.
My MM has a “Country House” theme this week.

I have to agree with you on that. You can also exchange “wife” for “daughter.”

Wow; every single one of these I’d like to have on my shelves, but I’m thinking “The Song Remains the Same” might be the one I’d like most. If you think about it, people wouldn’t really tell you the bad things about your relationship with them if you didn’t remember any of it, would they? Enjoy your reading week!
