I signed up for 8 challenges in 2011, and as the end of the year approaches, I’m still choosing my final selections to complete them. So for 2012, I thought I would pull back on the challenges a bit as I work my way through review copies and concentrate more on the books that have been sitting on my shelf for quite a long time. Although I’m only signing up for 3 challenges for the upcoming year, I expect to take part in some read-alongs and other events as they arise.
Of course, I’ll be participating in the World War I Reading Challenge that Serena and I are co-hosting on War Through the Generations. I’m committing to 4-10 books, hopefully more. I haven’t made a list, but I know for sure that I will be reading A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway for the challenge read-along.
Serena is bringing back the Fearless Poetry Exploration Challenge for its second year, which is exciting. Serena really works hard to get people excited about poetry and to just give it a try. I’m going to commit to reading at least 1 poetry book next year, but I hope to read more.
I couldn’t resist signing up for the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge at Historical Tapestry. I’m committing to the “Severe Bookaholism” level of 20 books. Since I’ve already read 40 books for the challenge this year (with a few left to go), it’s one I’m going to enjoy! I don’t have a list ready yet, but since I didn’t stick to my list for this year’s challenge, it’s probably best for me to wing it.
UPDATED: Apparently I can be persuaded to take on more challenges, try as I might to resist:
Suko’s Notebook is hosting The Jodi Picoult Project through October 2012, and by kindly pointing me toward her post, she convinced me to sign up. I’m only signing up to read 1 Jodi Picoult book, Second Glance, since it’s on my shelf already.
What challenges are you taking on in 2012?

I like challenges when I can wing it! Thanks for joining the poetry challenge.

Thanks for hosting it again! I think winging it works best for me. I spent a lot of time creating lists last year and strayed from all of them!

Anna, your reading challenges are wonderful, and led me to learn more about WWII. 🙂
As usual, I’m keeping the number of reading challenges I join to a minimum. And my requirement for them is that they don’t require me to read a lot of books! With this in mind, I created a Jodi Picoult reading challenge (because I want to read a few more of her intense novels!). Please stop by my book blog if you’re interested in learning more.

Thanks for convincing me to join your Jodi Picoult challenge. I’ve had Second Glance on my shelf for awhile now, so it’s about time I read it!

I love challenges! But this year I will stick to those that are true challenges for me. I am hosting two challenges this year: The Time Travel Reading Challenge because I love time travel books and don’t get to read enough of them, and also the Short Story Reading Challenge because I don’t usually read books that are collections of short stories and I have a few on my bookshelf. I have taken your example and made the challenges easy so that you only have to read one book at the lowest level. If you think these challenges are for you, then stop by my blog!

Thanks for letting me know about your challenges. I guess the ones I sign up for aren’t challenging for me, except for completing them on time. I think I like how they force me to make time for the books I really want to read.

I am only doing a few myself this year but now you’ve made me want to participate in the Historical Fiction…I love that genre…so I’m signing up! 😀

Yea! I can’t resist. I love Historical Fiction too much not to take part.

I’m keeping it very light as well. I’m not officially signing up for anything yet but might do small ones as they arise (like the RIP Challenge). I am going to do the TBR Double Dare though, which just means reading books on my shelves for the first three months of the year.

Good luck! I find that when I don’t officially sign up, I don’t take part, like the read-a-thons and stuff. We’ll see how it goes though. One year I’ll give the RIP Challenge a try.

I am also doing the Historical Fiction challenge. I am getting back into challenges this year!

I participate in just a few myself, so not to get overwhelmed. I am doing Suko’s Picoult challenge too. Happy reading 🙂

Thanks! I think I overdid it with the challenges last year and now I’m scrambling to complete them. I’m still having fun with them, though, and that’s all that counts.

You know except for read-alongs I am skipping reading challenges for 2012. I can’t keep up with them, and then I get mad at myself for not finishing them. I may have come close with the HF one this year, but I stopped keeping track. Good luck to you Anna 🙂

Thanks! I try to just go with the flow and not let them pressure me. It’s a challenge to actually complete them on time, rather than a challenge to read a certain genre, and that works best for me. But I take the attitude that if I don’t complete one or two, oh well. LOL

I’ve done such a bad job with challenges this year (as usual!) but I’m still thinking the Historical Fiction and War Through the Generations will have to be included in 2012. My goal is to really work on reading from my own shelves but I think I can do both of those and not have to buy a single book. Good luck!

I want to focus more on my own shelves in the new year, too, and like you, I have plenty of challenge books waiting there patiently. 🙂
