Welcome to Mailbox Monday, the weekly meme created by Marcia from A girl and her books (formerly The Printed Page) where book lovers share the titles they received for review, purchased, or otherwise obtained over the past week. Mailbox Monday currently is on tour, and this month, it is being hosted on the Mailbox Monday blog.
Here’s what I received:
All That I Am by Anna Funder, from HarperCollins for review (Amazon/IndieBound)
Release date: February 2012
An award-winning author delivers an affecting and beautifully evocative debut novel set in 1930s Europe and based on a true story, about a group of young German exiles who risk their lives to awaken the world to the terrifying threat of Hitler and Nazi Germany.
When eighteen-year-old Ruth Becker visits her political activist cousin Dora in Munich in 1923, she meets the love of her life, the dashing young journalist Hans Wesemann, and eagerly joins in the heady activities of the militant left in Weimar Germany. The three friends are working to secure the release from prison of Ernst Toller, a hero of the Great War, leader of the failed socialist revolution of 1919, and celebrated conscience of the Republic. Ten years later, Ruth and Hans are married and living in Berlin when Hitler comes to power, and their glamorous Weimar life comes abruptly to an end. Ernst is forced by the newly installed Nazi regime to flee the country, and Dora, his great love, follows him into exile, with Hans and Ruth not far behind. The four take refuge in London in 1933 and dedicate themselves to a passionate and dangerous mission: to bring down Hitler, and to alert the British government to the very real Nazi threat of which it has remained willfully blind.
Based on real people and historical events, Anna Funder’s novel brings to light new — and very early — heroes of the resistance. All That I Am is their heartbreaking story — a very special novel with an uncommon depth of humanity and wisdom, a searing and intimate portrait of courage and its price, of desire and ambition, and of the devastating consequences when they are thwarted. This book sounds riveting and exciting as well as, I’m guessing, troubling. It’s amazing how many books there are about the time during the wars and so many are so very good.
I hope you enjoy this book, Anna. I’m interested in your thoughts about it.

I’ve just finished reading ‘All That I Am’ (Australian edition) and can thoroughly recommend it. For some reason I’d never really realised just how early trouble started brewing in Europe before WWII finally broke out. Funder wears her erudition very lightly and writes beautifully about human strengths and failings in times of extreme duress. Put it on your Christmas list!
