Welcome to Mailbox Monday, the weekly meme created by Marcia from A girl and her books (formerly The Printed Page) where book lovers share the titles they received for review, purchased, or otherwise obtained over the past week. Mailbox Monday currently is on tour, and this month’s host is Life in the Thumb.
Here’s what I received:
Death in the City of Light: The Serial Killer of Nazi-Occupied Paris by David King (IndieBound/Amazon), from Crown Publishers via Shelf Awareness
Death in the City of Light is the true story of Marcel Petiot, a respectable physician by day and brutal serial killer by night in Nazi-occupied Paris. Petiot was charged with twenty-seven grisly murders, though his victims — many of whom were Jews seeking to escape the Nazis — may have numbered in excess of one hundred. Petiot was not only skilled at evading detection and capture, he was also expert at dismembering his victims beyond any chance of identification. The investigation was led by Commissaire Georges-Victor Massu of the Homicide Squad (himself the partial inspiration for Georges Simenon’s Maigret), who became entangled with a cast of captivating characters leading him through the shadowy world of the Gestapo, gangsters, nightclub owners, Resistance fighters, pimps, prostitutes, spies, and other nefarious figures of the Parisian underground.
This is a gripping story of adventure, glamour, intrigue, and abhorrent decadence on the eve of disaster. It is also an empowering tale of men and women braving great dangers to reveal the horrors of the Nazi regime. (publisher’s summary)
The Gendarme by Mark T. Mustian (IndieBound/Amazon), from Berkley/Penguin for review
To most people, Emmett Conn is a confused, old World War I veteran, fading in and out of senility. But in his mind, Emmett is haunted by events he’d long forgotten — or, perhaps, pushed away…
In his dreams he’s a gendarme, a soldier marching Armenians out of Turkey and committing unspeakable acts. Yet he feels compelled to spare one remarkable woman: Araxie, the girl with the piercing eyes.
As the past and present bleed together in The Gendarme, Emmett Conn sets out on one final journey to find Araxie and beg forgiveness before it’s too late. With uncompromising vision and boundless compassion, Mark T. Mustian has written a transcendent meditation on the power of memory — and the dangers of forgetting who we are and have been. (publisher’s summary)
The Poison Diaries: Nightshade by Maryrose Wood (IndieBound/Amazon), unrequested from HarperCollins Children’s Books UK
This is Book II of The Poison Diaries Trilogy
Sixteen-year-old Jessamine Luxton is heartbroken. Her true love, Weed, the strange and intriguing young man who came into her life so suddenly, has disappeared.
Jessamine suspects that her own father, Thomas, may have been involved. Thomas was obsessed with discovering Weed’s secret understanding of dangerous plants. This suspicion and her own growing expertise with poisons have changed her. She is no longer innocent. So when Jessamine learns that Weed is alive and in danger, she will do whatever it takes to be reunited with him, including killing whoever gets in her way. (publisher’s summary)

I did enjoy The Gendarme, but maybe didn’t love it. Still you learn something about a piece of history that generally remains undiscovered. Now this serial murderer in Nazi Germany? I’m chuckling. You couldn’t get a book more up my alley!!!
