Welcome to Mailbox Monday, the weekly meme created by Marcia from The Printed Page where book lovers share the titles they received for review, purchased, or otherwise obtained over the past week. Mailbox Monday currently is on tour, and this month’s host is Shanyn from Chick Loves Lit.
Here’s what I added to my shelves:
Girl Stolen by April Henry, from Shelf Awareness
Sixteen-year-old Cheyenne Wilder is sleeping in the back of the car while her stepmom fills her prescriptions. Before Cheyenne realizes what’s happening, someone is stealing the car — with her inside! Griffin hadn’t meant to kidnap Cheyenne; all he planned to do was take the car. But once Griffin’s dad finds out that Cheyenne’s father is the president of a powerful corporation, everything changes — now there’s a reason to keep her. How will Cheyenne survive this nightmare? She’s not only sick — she’s BLIND! (publisher’s summary)
Going Away Shoes by Jill McCorkle, unrequested from Algonquin
Here are eleven brand-new stories about women and love and the complications therein, from “the guardian angel of American short fiction.” In honeymoon shoes, mud-covered hunting boots, or glass slippers, all of these women are on the edge of either a breakdown or a breakthrough. They are strong. And tough. They’re funny even while they are sad.
This sure-footed collection is the work of a great storyteller who knows exactly how — and why — to pair longing with laughter. (publisher’s summary)
What books did you add to your shelves recently?

Looks like we have an unrequested book in common!

At least it sounds interesting. Sometimes I get unrequested books that leave me scratching my head as to why they chose me.

Girl stolen sounds good. But that blurb, the should have skipped the exclamation mark, too much fake drama feeling

I agree, but I just chocked it up to it being a book that straddles the line between middle grade and YA. Still unnecessary, though.

Going Away shoes looks promising! I haven’t read a nice short story in ages.
Happy reading!

Me either, so I hope to have a chance to read it soon. Unfortunately, I don’t always have time to read the unrequested books in a timely manner.

I am all over the shoes book. It also reminds me of when my son was in preschool, he had these snazzy brown leather shoes that he would wear sometimes, and would call them his “busy shoes” meaning when he wore them, he was uber productive. I don’t know why I digressed there…sorry!

No worries. Your digressions are always entertaining. 🙂

I received a copy of The Rembrandt Affair and I added a copy of The Forest of Hands and Teeth to my shelves since I’m teaching it this semester. That’s about it! Pretty conservative for me. 🙂

Over the week I received an e-copy of Myne Whitman’s novel A Heart to Mend. I have just finished reading Wole Soyinka’s You Must Set Forth at Dawn and reading another novel I purchased last week Powder Necklace by Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond (Interviewed her on my blog)

I’m so glad to hear that because I hadn’t heard of the author before getting the book. Not that I could remember anyway. 😉

Both of these sound superb! I’m not doing this meme today, because my “mailbox” has been rather devoid of books lately. But as you know, I did just win a book. Thanks so much! 🙂

You’re welcome! I haven’t been buying books and I’m not accepting as many these days, so I’m sure I won’t be participating in this meme as often as I had been in the coming months.
