Hope you’re all having a great weekend! We’ve been going through a brutal cold spell here, and there’s finally some snow on the ground. I’m hoping to be able to curl up on the couch with a cup of tea and a good book, but it’s been busy, busy, busy as usual. Here are my random thoughts this weekend:
*First, I’d like to give a shout out to The Girl, who recently won 1st place in the Biology category at the school science fair. I’m so proud, and also glad that this was the last science fair until at least high school. Her project was about peppermint and reaction times.
*Our book club met last weekend at Serena‘s to discuss Eyes, Stones, a poetry collection by Elana Bell about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I thought it was an interesting discussion overall. Only one member mentioned not understanding the poems, and it was great to see Serena in her element emphasizing the importance of reading poetry aloud and knowing how and where to pause. Most of us weren’t strangers to poetry, but we agreed that this collection wouldn’t be the place for a newbie to start. Visit Serena’s blog for a more in-depth recap of our discussion.
*I also have a giveaway winner!
Melissa, who won a copy of The Missing Manuscript of Jane Austen by Syrie James. Congratulations and happy reading!!
Stop by on Wednesday for another Austenesque giveaway!
*Lastly, I want to know: what are you reading this weekend? I’m hoping to start Circles of Time by Phillip Rock and Shadows by Ilsa J. Bick (our February book club pick) and maybe finish The Man Who Loved Jane Austen by Sally Smith O’Rourke (which is a re-read for me to refresh my memory before reading the sequel, Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen).
Have a great weekend!!

Congratulations to The Girl! It’s interesting that you all are reading Shadows because it is so totally not a standalone! I even had to have Ashes next to me while I read it at first to go over some parts I didn’t remember. A very interesting (and I don’t think spoilery to say) aspect of Shadows is the hit Vietnam vets take in it.

Our book club read the first book, Ashes, during our first cycle, so we’re all set to read Shadows.

I’m glad I got to be part of the girl’s experiment, though my reaction times were horrible! LOL I’ll be reading All That I Am and finishing This Totally Bites by Ruth Ames…before starting Leaves….at least that’s the plan. With the little one running around and the hubby working again this Saturday, we’ll see how far I get.

Thanks for helping her with the project!
I really need to get around to reading All That I Am. It’s sitting so patiently on my shelf, lol.

Congrats to The Girl! That’s great.
Sounds like you had a nice discussion going at the book club.
I enjoyed The Man Who Loved Jane Austen myself, happy re-reading 🙂 I’m reading and enjoying Losing Hope by Johanna Garth. Enjoy your weekend!

That’s another new to me book!
I remember enjoying The Man Who Loved Jane Austen the first time around — it was one of the first Austen-inspired novels I read — and I remember much of the storyline. I just don’t want to miss any references when I read the sequel.

I’m not as far into Shadows as I’d like to be, so I’m glad the book club was pushed up one week!

I’m tired of the cold too!! I would rather have tons of snow with temps in the 30s than this cold brutal arctic air!! Congrats to the Girl for the 1st place prize!!!

Thanks, Staci! It’s supposed to snow again here tonight. All we’ve been getting is a dusting here and there, but that’s fine with me. 😉

She certainly is. I’m glad she likes science and math more than I did!

Congrats to The Girl! I never won those fairs. I think I was always a year behind in the projects instead of working ahead.
I bet Serena is awesome discussing poetry in person! That collection sounds interesting.
This week I am finishing up In Too Deep by Kathryn Shay and I am still working on Flutter by Melissa Andrea.

More new to me books! I’ll have to look those up.
I only did one science fair when I was in 10th grade, so I think it’s great that my daughter was exposed to them early on. It’s made her really excited about science.

Congratulations to your daughter on her 1st place! Her project sounds very cool. That is fantastic and I am most impressed!
Eyes Stones by Elana Bell sounds like a good read for your book club, especially with Serena to lead the discussion. I’d love to be part of a discussion on poetry when she’s heading it.
Congratulations to Melissa on her win as well!
Anna, are you enjoying Circles of Time?

Thanks, Amy!
Yes, I actually loved Circles of Time. Now I can’t wait to read the last book, but at the same time, I don’t want to read it because I don’t want my time with those characters to end. 😉
